It's a wonderful atmosphere, filled with happy knowledgeable employees who are always eager just to talk or direct. Home cooked food and take great care of their property
Yes it's expensive, but that's because it's in the middle of nowhere, nestled in a prime location in the heart of the White Mountains. The trail up Mt. Washington begins literally right out the back door. The AMC is a nonprofit that is one of the great stewards of wild lands in this country, maintaining the trails, signs, huts, and other facilities that we all use, and doing endless good work for the community. I'd much rather pay money to support that mission while I lodge than pay a for-profit hotel chain.

Historic Lodge. Clean facilities, friendly and helpful staff. Dinning Hall has a variety of good food. Great atmosphere.
Wonderful lodge in the heart of the Whites. Great staff. Family style dinners, so you meet a lot of other mountain lovers. Base-camp for hiking and skiing Tuckerman's Ravine.
Nobody does lodging better than the AMC. I would happily take a night at the Joe Dodge Lodge over the fanciest 5 stay hotel in the world anytime. There's a game room, two pianos, fireplaces, and a library with a fantastic selection of field guides, outdoor related literature and manuals, and 'Appalachia' journals going back over a century. This is easily the coziest place in the world in the winter. The breakfasts and dinners across the walkway in Pinkham are always done right. I've been staying at Joe Dodge Lodge since I was a little kid, and it always brings back a rush of happy memories every time I walk in. I can't give enough stars.
